"The voting location for all districts is now at the Community Center, located in the 4500 block of Central Avenue." Mayor Desiderio put that line in his October 15, 2026 message, between a note about dredging Townsends Inlet and the street-sweeping schedule. This is the first fall and winter with the new building open, and much of Sea Isle's off-season calendar now meets there. Halloween is there. Election Day is there. Indoor pickleball, winter yoga, senior fitness, the book club, free concerts and the Veterans Day rain plan are all there too.
If you own a place on the island and come down after Columbus Day, the town you return to has a new center of gravity a block off Landis.
A School Site Turned Into the Town's Living Room
The Community Center sits on the former public-school site at 4501 Park Road. The city reported that the school building came down in spring 2023. City Council awarded the $21,093,000 construction contract to Ernest Bock & Sons on February 27, 2024. Before that, the fitness classes ran out of the old Community Lodge's fitness room.
The grand opening took place on Saturday, March 28, 2026. The city's newsletter reported that about 1,000 people came. The OCNJ Sentinel's opening coverage described a ribbon cutting, public tours and ceremonial first layups in the gym. The city's October 15 project update lists the building as "now open to the public and fully operational." Bock Construction is still working through a few minor punch-list items.
Inside the 44,000 square feet, according to the city's Community Center page, you'll find:
- An NBA-size gym striped for three pickleball courts and volleyball, with bleachers, six perimeter basketball nets and a dividing curtain
- A community meeting room with a stage and kitchen, a fitness classroom, an arts-and-crafts room and a quiet room with books, puzzles and sensory items
- Upstairs, an elevated walking and running track, cardio and weight equipment, a golf simulator, a multi-ball game room and a civic meeting room
- Free parking in the outdoor lot and in the garage under the building
Overnight parking isn't allowed, and the garage gates lock when the center closes. The building also isn't a library. The Cape May County Library's Sea Isle branch is still listed separately at 4800 Central Avenue.
The Membership Card Is the First Errand
Everyone 18 and older needs a membership card. General use is free for children through age 17 and for Sea Isle property owners and year-round residents, so a second-home owner pays nothing to walk the track in January. Visitors pay. That includes houseguests and adult kids who don't own on the island.
| Item | Cost or hours |
|---|---|
| General use, property owners and year-round residents | Free |
| General use, everyone else 18+ | $5 per day, $40 per month or $120 per year |
| Total Body Fitness class | $5 per class or $40 per month |
| Sit-Fit Seniors | Free |
| Indoor pickleball, members and season-tag holders | Free; others $5 per session |
| Golf simulator, groups up to four | $55 per hour off-peak, $75 per hour peak |
| Monday to Thursday | 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. |
| Friday | 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. |
| Saturday | 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
| Sunday and listed holidays | 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. |
The center is closed on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and hours can shift around events. The center is now the Recreation Office's home, as the OCNJ Sentinel reported, and getting a card starts there. First, set up an account on the office's online Rec Desk system. Property owners upload a copy of their tax bill, and year-round renters upload a lease or a utility bill in their name. Then bring an ID to the front desk to pick up the card.
Halloween Moves Into the Garage, and Election Day Follows
The clearest sign of the shift is the end-of-October calendar. Three of the town's biggest dates, all within five days, use the same building.
- Friday, October 30, 6 to 8 p.m. "The Curse of Fish Alley Lagoon" is a new haunted house for 2026, set up in the center's parking garage. You enter through the lobby, and it's recommended for ages 10 and up.
- Saturday, October 31, 5 to 7 p.m. Trunk or Treat moves to the Community Center parking lot, which the city lists as a new location for 2026. Participating cars need to be parked by 4:30 p.m. and stay until 7. The citywide trick-or-treat route with participating properties and businesses runs the same night from 5 to 8 p.m.
- Tuesday, November 3, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. All four Sea Isle polling districts vote at the Community Center.
After that, the building backs up the outdoor events. The Veterans Day Ceremony on Wednesday, November 11, is set for Veterans Park, with the Community Center as the rain location. The city used the same plan in the spring, when it named the center the rain site for its April 4 Spring Fling. Two days after Veterans Day, on Friday, November 13, the Joe Kenney Band plays a free show in the Community Room from 6 to 8 p.m.
A Weekly Rhythm Through March
Between those dates, the building runs a weekly schedule, and most of it follows the off-season calendar.
- Indoor pickleball runs October 1 through March 31. The October schedule has sessions on Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.
- Winter yoga moves off the beach and into the center from October 5, 2026, through mid-May 2027. Classes are Tuesdays 6 to 7 p.m. and Fridays 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., at $16 per class.
- Sit-Fit for seniors is free and meets Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
- Total Body Fitness meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 10 a.m.
- The Sea Isle Book Club meets on the third Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m.: November 19, December 17 and January 21. It's for ages 18 and up, and you need to preregister.
- Craft & Connect for adults runs on Fridays. The October listings also include movie programming and line dancing. Dates can change, so check the Community Center calendar before you go.
Before this year, the island had no single indoor place where a pickleball group, a yoga class and a book club could all meet on a Tuesday in January.
Where to Eat a Few Blocks Away
A morning at the center pairs well with the stretch of year-round spots a few blocks north. The Sea Isle City Chamber's fall dining hours page is the best single list. Hours change through the season, so call ahead.

- Maryanne Pastry Shoppe, 108 44th St., Thursday to Sunday, 7 a.m. to noon
- Raffa's Charcuterie & Fine Foods, 4000 Pleasure Ave., Thursday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Farther south, Chamber listings show La Fontana Coast at 5000 Landis Ave. open daily for dinner from 4 to 10 p.m. Rick's Breakfast House at 6112 Landis Ave. is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Uncle Oogie's Pizzeria at 6118 Landis Ave. runs 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and to 9 p.m. on weekends. Shorebreak Cafe at 8301 Landis Ave. is open Thursday to Sunday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Fractured Prune at 5004 Landis Ave. is marked closed for the season.
Thanksgiving Weekend Returns to Excursion Park
The holidays bring the calendar back outside, and the parade follows Central Avenue for much of its route. On Friday, November 27, the Christmas Parade and Mayor's Tree Lighting run from 6 to 8 p.m. The route starts at 29th Street and Central Avenue, heads south to 84th, then comes north on Landis Avenue to Excursion Park. Winter Village opens at Excursion Park the same weekend, with Santa, performances, shopping and food. Hours are Friday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
That weekend also includes:
- Holiday Wreath Auction bidding, November 25 to 28, with the wreaths on display at Winter Village
- Shop Small Business Weekend, November 27 to 29, at participating businesses
Before the holiday, Fall Girls Weekend runs November 20 to 22, with deals and events at participating businesses. In December, the Sea Isle City Museum holds a Holiday Open House on December 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4800 Central Ave. Family & Friends Night brings extended shopping and dining hours on December 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. Then the Cape Shore Chorus Holiday Concert brings everyone back to the Community Center on December 19, from 2 to 3 p.m.
The Winter Work Crews Share the Same Streets
Off-season road work is part of shore life, and this winter it's busiest right around the new building. According to the city's October 15 project update, Lexa Concrete has resumed its $1,150,184 reconstruction and repaving of Central Avenue from JFK Boulevard to 56th Street. Crews are working south from JFK Boulevard, which takes them right past the center's block.
Other projects on the winter list:
- Pleasure Avenue, 79th to 85th Streets. Arawak Paving holds a $363,700 reconstruction contract, with work expected to start in early to mid-November.
- 5th Street ADA beach walkover and observation platform. The $621,000 project by Walters Marine Construction is fully covered by a Cape May County Open Spaces grant. DEP permits limit construction to December 1 through March 15.
- Promenade Lighting Phase 2. All new poles are up from 29th to 35th Street and 44th to 57th Street, and electrical wiring is underway.
- Promenade bulkheads and ramps. Work has resumed at 29th, 30th and 32nd Streets. The project includes ADA ramps at 32nd, 40th and 47th Streets.
- Water service replacement is underway at 53rd and 59th Streets.
- Water system aerators at the 40th and 55th Street treatment facilities, which treat drinking water drawn from aquifers 800 feet down, are expected to be finished by spring 2027.
Boaters should know that the city reached an agreement with the Borough of Avalon to dredge Townsends Inlet, where sand buildup has choked the channel under the bridge. The mayor's message said work was expected to begin the week after October 15. The street sweeper is running through at least November 5: Tuesdays from 2nd to 44th Street, Wednesdays from 45th to 70th, and Thursdays from 71st to 94th. Move your car off the street on your day if you can. The Fire Department's 135th Anniversary and Housing Celebration, which was rescheduled, is Saturday, November 14, at 1 p.m. at the firehouse next to City Hall. The administration will also present its five-year capital plan at a public workshop on November 10 at 1 p.m.
